Blue Weber aka “Tequilana”

Blue Weber Agave, also known as “Tequilana”, is one of the most sought after varieties in cultivation. It’s high sugar content and relatively short maturation period make it ideal for farming. It is one of the more picky varieties and requires more mild climates than some of the hardier varieties. It brings notoriety to it’s products as well as a delicious flavor profile.

  • This plant can take as little as 5 years to harvest but can be harvested as long as 8 years after planting.

  • The plant is hardy to 33 degrees and can handle short periods of dry temperatures as low as 29 degrees. Short periods are sub-freezing temperatures of less than 4 hours a day.

  • Depending on the part of California the plant is grown in and average rainfall, you can expect to irrigate 4 to 9 inches a year.

  • The biggest vulnerability for this plant are extended periods of frost. Water accumulation at the base of the plant can also cause rotting, a good rule of thumb is to grab a handful of soil and squeeze, the soil should maintain form without dripping water.

  • These plants are generally 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. We recommend workers wear protective glasses and gloves when in the field due to their needle like thorns and spines.

Very similar to the Blue Weber Agave, Angustifolia Hawthorne is another staple in agave spirits. It shares the same short maturation period as Blue Weber and produces similar yields. This plant produces more pups than it’s counterparts and can withstand harsher climates than Blue Weber with a slightly better cold tolerance. It’s suited for most climates but thrives best in a dry desert environment.
